Welcome, New Developers, to WordPress

Welcome, New Developers, to WordPress

John Hewick

The changes at WordPress aren’t just going to impact on PHP developers who are going to have to learn new skill sets. The REST API will herald a new group of developers who work with front end languages such as JavaScript. They will come into the WordPress fold and start to build applications which use WordPress APIs.

It’s interesting times we’re living in.

Because these people may not have worked with WordPress before, they will be the ones that come up with the new and innovative ways which it can be used to create new apps and new kinds of websites using the platform.

Most digital agencies currently have a set up with both front end developers and back end. In WordPress agencies like ours, it’s often the back end developers who are the people that are working in the world of bespoke WordPress sites. Because the REST API means that the back end developers are going to have to be working with front end languages, there is more scope for front end devs to be creating new interfaces and applications that use WordPress data. Anything could happen!

PHP isn’t going away however. If you are a developer and you’re brilliant at JavaScript, but not so hot at PHP, you really should work on honing your skills. The WordPress APIs are still built on PHP and it isn’t going anywhere soon.
