Using Custom Fonts on Your WordPress Website

Nowadays, visual branding is an extremely important step when building a new business.  However, in some cases, the font you use for your brand may not be available on any of the major font hosting sites.  These include Fonts, Google and Typekit.  If this is the case, you will need to find alternative ways to display your brand fonts.

Fortunately, it is now possible to convert your brand font into website-friendly fonts and embed them like any other.  Also, this process is surprisingly easy to follow, which is great news for newbies!  Thanks to plugins like Font Organizer and Font Squirrel’s web font generator, you will easily be able to convert your brand’s font.

In this article, we’ll be taking a closer look at the necessary steps you need to take to make sure your brand’s font is ready to use on your WordPress website.  We will then show you how to use your fonts on WordPress.

Preparing Your Brand’s Font for the Web

Sadly, it is not possible to simply upload your font as it is to the internet and expect it to work.  As people use a number of different operating systems and web browsers, this means there will always be different requirements for fonts. The good news is that you now have the ability to convert your usual brand font into a myriad of different formats.  This makes your brand font accessible on almost every available platform.

Before you can add your band format to your WordPress website, you’ll first need to check to see if the font you are using has any copyright issues.  In order to use a font, you must always respect its copyrights.  Also, you need to use proper licensing.  When it comes to your finding font’s license, you have a couple of options:

  1. Find the original font download folder to access the license
  2. Ask your designer for the font license
  3. Visit the site you used to download your font and search for the license

If you do not have the right license for your font, make sure to go back to the source and purchase the correct one.  If you are still in doubt, make sure to contact the creator of the font.

Converting Your Brand Font to ‘Web-Friendly’ Formatting

Once you have checked and double checked that you have the correct license for your font, you are now in the clear to convert it into a web-friendly format.  Now, there are a number of conversion tools you can use online for free.

We would recommend using a web font generator like Font Squirrel, as the whole conversion process is quick and straightforward.  Once you have uploaded your font to the font generator, you can then download the web-friendly font .zip file.  Make sure to save this somewhere safe, as you will need this file to upload the proper format to your site.

Adding Your Font to Your WordPress Website

Now that you have converted your font, you can then add it to your WordPress website.  This is a simple process and all you need to do is install the Font Organizer Plugin.  You can then upload and configure your font.  Once your font is in place, you will easily be able to integrate it into your CSS.
