More News from WordPress’ Gutenberg Project!

The current WordPress visual editor has stayed pretty much the same over the years.  While this isn’t a bad thing, many users think it’s time for a change.  If you’re one of the people who really wants a change, you’ll be happy to know that contributors and volunteers have been working on the brand-new Gutenberg WordPress editor.  The Gutenberg Project is designed to make your editing experience in WordPress simple and enjoyable.  We’re diving into the new Gutenberg project, talking you through some of the best features of this new editor.

What is the Gutenberg Project?

Gutenberg is a take on a new editor for the WordPress platform.  The current visual editor available on the WordPress platform requires users to utilise shortcodes and HTML to make things work.  The goal of the new editor is to make this whole process far easier, especially for novice WordPress users.  This new editor is embracing ‘little blocks’ and hopes to continually add more advanced layout options.  As the new Gutenberg editor is currently in the testing phase, WordPress users are being encouraged to test out the new features this editor offers.

How to Install Gutenberg

The Gutenberg editor requires WordPress version 4.8.  It’s super easy to download the latest version of Gutenberg.  You can also search for this new feature in the WordPress dashboard under ‘Add New’ plugins.  Your best bet would be to install this on a test site before exploring the new features it offers.

Exploring Gutenberg

Once you have installed the new Gutenberg editor, you will immediately see links under your Posts that will allow you to access the new Gutenberg editor.  This will not replace the default WordPress editor, as you can bounce back and forth whilst Gutenberg remains in its testing phase.  You will be able to access a demo mode that allows you to create a new post using the new editor.  Once you access this demo mode, you will immediately see that this new editor has a completely new look.  For people writing on laptops, you’ll be happy to know that you will be given a lot more writing space with Gutenberg.  Gutenberg is definitely focused on writing first, which is great if you’re adding a lot of content to your site.

One of the best things about Gutenberg is how easy it is to use on mobile.  If you’re out on the move but need to make some last-minute changes to your WordPress post, you will find it easy to insert a paragraph of text or insert an image on your mobile.

New Editing Features

We thought we would talk you through a couple of the new features you can expect when using Gutenberg.  Firstly, creating simple tables just got a whole lot easier, as you can insert them as blocks within the editor.  Secondly, there will also be a built-in method for adding a button feature.  This is a handy addition for bloggers!  Gutenberg also makes adding embedded content super easy.  This combined with the new block experience and alignment options help create a fantastic editing experience.

Have you tested out the brand-new Gutenberg editor yet?  If so, let us know about your experience in the comments below.
