How to Use a Broken Link Checker for Your Website

Did you know that broken website links can have a negative impact on your website and SEO rankings?  If you’re thinking of migrating your website from one platform to another, checking broken links is a crucial step.  Here, we’re going to take a look at four of the best broken link checker options. These tools will easily be able to find and fix any broken links.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider

If you’re unfamiliar with SEO Spider, it is a very powerful offline tool.  This software also acts as a broken link checker.  It is not an online tool, so you are required to download the Screaming Frog SEO Spider software.  This software is easy to install on your computer and is a good option for anyone looking to double check the links on your website.  Below, we’ve provided a step by step guide on how to use the SEO Spire tool:

  • Open the offline broken link checker tool
  • Enter the URL of your website and hit the Start button
  • After the website is scanned, you will be shown a list of all the internal links with a HTTP response code. You need to look at the 404-status code.
  • This is easy to do if you sort the ‘Status Code’ column
  • You will then be able to see any links you need to fix
  • To determine which post has this link, you will need to click on the Inlinks at the bottom
  • You will then easily be able to determine which post has a broken link

Dead Link Checker

This is an online tool and gives you the option to check either a single page or your entire website.  If you are not comfortable with installing additional software to use an offline tool then this is your best option.  The Multi Check option means you can run Dead Link Checker through multiple websites at once.  Your report will then receive an automatic email with your results.  The most popular service this tool offers is the Auto Check.  This service will run Dead Link Checker through your website on a regular basis and then email out the report to you automatically.

Broken Link Checker

Another good online option for checking whether your website is suffering from any broken links is the Broken Link Checker tool.  This tool will scan your website for any dead hyperlinks.  The Broken Link Checker can analyse an unlimited number of pages.  This service will check both internal and external URLs and will determine which, if any, are stale.  It will also report any bad link’s locations in your HTML code.

Dr. Link Check

Dr. Link Check will scan your entire website for 1000 links for free and at the end, it will provide a summary of all internal, external and broken links.  If your website is on the smaller side, then this broken link checker would be a good option for you.  However, if you have more than 1000 links to check we suggest using a different tool to determine which links on your website are broken.

If you have used any of these tools in the past, let us know how well they worked in the comments below.
