Creating Custom Category Pages in WordPress

Category pages are a great way to divide your blog articles up into easy to view topics. It gives the user a more optimum experience where they can easily read the content that interests them, avoiding unnecessary interaction with irrelevant posts.

Clearly, having category pages on site is an easy way to increase the average time users spend reading your precious blog articles.

Although there are ways to create category pages using a WordPress theme, this can often be overly complex and lack certain information that’s useful for your audience. Instead, the much easier and far less complex solution is using a plugin such as WP Custom Category Pages.

As added incentive, this is not only good for your user but could possibly increase your rankings on the search engines. As these category pages can include their own SEO friendly content, they can actually rank and bring in a much wider audience. That said, it’s worth downloading the WP Custom Category Pages and giving it a try.

Getting started

This free plugin can be installed directly from the WordPress plugin directory. Once it’s been installed, you can access the handy features via the sidebar menu. Configuring a category page couldn’t be easier via the WP Custom Category Pages menu.

In the event your theme utilises any additional page templates, these can be selected for use as the category page. There’s even the option to include a full width layout without any sidebars, depending on your current theme.

After clicking ‘Start creating your custom pages’ you can edit and add all the relevant information. That includes a ‘Category Headline’ as well as the search engine optimised copy.

Conveniently, this plugin allows you to use WordPress editor to add the copy. This gives you freedom to change layout and format without any complicated coding needed. Add images as you would do when uploading a blog article, as well as hyperlinks to other sections on site.

Once you’ve hit the ‘save’ button, this new category page will appear on site and display/ link through to any relevant posts within that category.

Showcasing your blog articles

This is a far more attractive way of showcasing your work. Newly written content is now categorised alongside other articles which compliment a same or similar topic. This plugin works especially well for those without any developer knowledge but the results can vary depending on the WordPress theme being used.

Rather than letting old posts collect dust never to be seen again, this new form of category display shines a light on your best work. It lets you choose what’s seen in the category pages, giving more insight for the reader and the convenience of seeing all relatable information on one page.

As mentioned, the ranking benefits can also drive more traffic to your site. If you’ve not yet implemented category pages, it could be worth enjoying the benefits with the WP Custom Category Pages plugin.
