Building the PERFECT link profile

When we look at SEO today, we know that there is a list of best practices that we need to follow in order to make sure that we are driving traffic to our websites and building revenue for our businesses. We’ve all heard over and over that you shouldn’t buy links, avoid bad content and link directories. However, businesses also need to focus on building a complete link profile and not just on each individual link. This can be an issue for a business which may have already amassed a large number of links without monitoring them.

A good link profile will have more of an effect on your website than practically any other SEO practice. If you don’t keep an eye out on your link profile, you will quickly find yourself at the mercy of every change to Google’s algorithm and updates like Penguin and Hummingbird.

So how can you build the best link profile for your site? Here is what you’ll need.

Authoritative Links

Links from sites with high authority is your number one prize when building up a link profile. These show that you are a well-trusted site and through the association your website is boosted as well. These are the links that provide the highest value to your overall SEO score.

At the opposite end of the scale, you don’t want to have a large number of low authority links. There will be some on your profile as it is almost impossible to get rid of all of them but you must not actively build them up. Try to keep them in the minority on your profile.

Anchor Text

If you build your link profile with individual links, you can fail to spot trends that you need to keep a close eye on. One thing you must look out for is the anchor text that is used to link back to your site. Keyword-rich text is what you’re looking for but it can’t be the whole picture. You need to keep your anchor text diverse with a number of keyword rich texts as well as words similar but not identical to your targeted keywords. This helps Google identify good links.

Follow and Nofollow

Your website also should have links that provide SEO value or follow links. There should also be a number of nofollow links as well or it can start to look suspicious.

Keeping Links Up To Date

You need to be ensuring that you are getting fresh links all the time. This is because Google likes to ensure that the results that they are giving are up-to-date and right for what people are searching for. If you get good links but don’t keep your content up-to-date, Google will end up penalising you.

Good Content

One of the best ways to get good links is through creating great content which people actually want to link to. This will end up leading to a variety of links from good and less sources, but this is what you want for your overall profile to be effective.
